I'm not a K-Pop fan neither a Korean Drama fan.
But I was eager to visit Korea because Mr B has been there several times, for business purposes. I'd wanted to accompany him before but either he went there with his colleague or I had class at that time.
So, when I heard that he will be going to Korea again and he might go alone, I'd asked him to arrange the time so that I could accompany him, finally.
Well, since Mr B was also an ex foreign students of Japan university, he tends to compare Japan, Korea and Malaysia, and this is what he always tells me about Korea:
"Korean is nothing like Japanese, they are more like Malaysian."
So, yeah, I was curious to know Korea and the people of Korea!
The short visit was wonderful. I'd experienced the -17,-18 degrees and it was freezing as h*ll but overall it was a fruitful experience. Furthermore, my ex-students happened to visit Korea at the same time, so they invited me to join their sightseeing tours. I was really grateful for their invitation as Mr B couldn't accompany me.
Well, I'm not going to elaborate more about the sightseeing tours but I would like to write about what I found out about Korea/Korean which amazed me.
1) The escalator rules
In Japan, people who wish to just stand on escalator line up at the left side. The right side is for people who wish to hurry up. However, in Korea, it is the right side for those who wish to stay and the left is for those in hurry. I once stayed at the left side before I realized that others were at the right side! hehe.
Well, I am used to the left side rules and even practicing it in Malaysia... Oh, in Malaysia? Still no rules in Malaysia!

2) Salesman in train
While we were heading to Nami Island by train, suddenly someone stood in the middle and spoke loudly. At first, I was startled by his action but soon I realized that he was selling something. This is new to me. For me, it is an invasion of privacy, but it seems that it is allowed in Korea! Even, people were actually buying!
During this journey, I think 2 or 3 salesman came and I'd managed to capture a picture of one makcik were selling something like a torchlight and another makcik were buying the item! Wow, I really couldn't believe this situation is allowed in Korea!

3) They do not silence their mobile phone in train
Nowadays, using mobile phone in train is a normal situation. People sms-ing, watching movies or music videos, or playing games. But, people do not talk (having conversation) using phone in train!
I don't know about Malaysia, but I certainly think that people especially people from a develop country like Korea (it's not a double standard) shouldn't do that! So yes, I was shocked to see this "selamba sahaja bercakap kuat-kuat dalam train" phenomena in train in this country!
4) They do not flush their toilet paper?
Wow, this one is really the most shocking ones! Of course I didn't know and I couldn't find any notice about "do not throw toilet paper in toilet bowl" in any toilet. Well if there were any, it was written in Korean....so, how should I know?
One Malaysian student in Korea, who were kind of our tour guide told me about this. "That is why there is a big garbage can next to a toilet bowl" - that was what she told us. I was like, REALLY? Oh my, I could not believe that a develop country like Korea, could not make a "flush-able" toilet paper or a toilet paper "processable" toilet system?
Well, later I'd found out through internet that although there are still a few uncivilized toilet system in Korea, the number of the civilized ones have increased. Still, I am shock!
5) Funny soap in toilet
Well, this is really funny. A few times I saw this in public toilet in Korea: It is a soap.
The hygiene factor is certainly questionable :)
Well, that's all...things that amazed me in Korea.
Yes, Korea and Japan are geographically near each other but different.
Till the next visit! and I would love to visit Korea again - may be not during winter! :)
p.s: To Syamim, Atiqah, Farah and Fadhilah:
Thank you very much dear for putting up with me during out 2 days together. Love you all :)
